Woodbird is more than just a business for Duane and Jen Winchester… it's the culmination of hard work, experience, and a healthy dose of believing in the power of dreams. Both are creative spirits fueled by this notion that life should be lived and not wasted waiting for tomorrow.
Duane, a draftsman by trade, discovered his creativity at an early age, spending many a Sunday morning laying on the floor and drawing every comic he came across. Pencil and paper were his first true love and still hold a special place in his work. His father inspired him to see beyond 'what was' and imagine 'what could be' - possibly out of necessity in his era. He built his own table saw using a washing machine motor, and long nights on the job meant a custom-built sleeper on his pick-up… his father encouraged an engineering mind-set in Duane.
Throughout his life - working for engineering firms, serving in the National Guard, attending college, and running his first business - Duane spent his free time helping friends and family with any construction or renovation project he could get his hands on. In the early 90s he completed his first whole house remodel. During the same time, he converted an old seed and fertilizer storage building into his office space. Working with his hands and being able to apply his engineering and creativity to projects became his passion.
After years of doing this work on the side and waiting for the right time to pursue it completely, Duane launched Woodbird by Winchester in 2012. As a licensed contractor with experience in all aspects of home construction and renovation and an artist's eye, Duane is able to put his whole heart into the work he does for his clients.
Always thinking about what could be, Duane's become a bit of a collector - reclaimed wood, retired farm equipment, scrap steel, antiques, and …well anything that's cast aside that could breathe new life. He sees possibility, he thinks of how it could work, he imagines what it could be, and he imagines someone falling in love with it as he has…
Joining Woodbird is Duane's wife Jen (www.soulbirdbywinchester.com). Jen, a yogi in training and a health and wellness advocate, partners with her husband on the marketing and long-term growth of Woodbird.
The mission of Woodbird is simple really...
Create "things" that speak to who we are and stand the test of time without creating a negative impact on the world around us.
By working with Woodbird, you are fulfilling the dream of two people who will leave their mark on the world by creating pieces that inspire you to do the same.
Regardless of the project, the process remains fairly consistent. Duane wants to get to know you - your style, your needs, your space. Most projects start with a face-to-face meeting to go over these things and likely lead to Duane putting pencil to paper. Room plans, design concepts, or ideas get sketched out and conversation continues until a concept is agreed upon. Then, budgets get discussed and approved before moving into construction of the piece or project.
We are grateful to our clients for putting their trust in us, therefore we are only satisfied when clients are truly in love with the work that's been done. It's referrals from happy clients that have allowed us to continue this dream.
"The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know it when you find it." ~Steve Jobs
